Transforming Media Prima Berhad: IPSB Technology and Arista Networks Enhance Broadcast Network Performance
Executive Summary
IPSB Technology, in collaboration with Arista Networks, has transformed the broadcast network architecture of Media Prima Berhad. This upgrade has streamlined workflows and enhanced broadcast quality, meeting the growing demands of Media Prima’s audience.
Media Prima Berhad, Malaysia’s largest integrated media group, reaches over 28 million viewers. In 2016, the company introduced new initiatives to maintain its leadership across all genres, targeting both Chinese and Malay audiences and catering to the local digital landscape with interactive solutions.
By 2018, Media Prima had become the most popular choice for mobile content among Malaysians, surpassing Google and Facebook. Data from Comscore Mobile Metrix Top 100 Properties showed Media Prima leading with 13.60 million unique visitors, a 62% increase from December 2017. This underscores the success of Media Prima’s transformation into Malaysia’s leading digital-first content and commerce company.
To strengthen brand loyalty and deliver quality broadcasting services, Media Prima has prioritized high-capacity, streamlined networking to handle its broadcast environment and departmental workflows. The new broadcast network reduces the transfer time for a 10GB file from 15 minutes to less than 2 minutes, eliminating network latency and bottlenecks while increasing port density potential.
Overview – The Quick Pitch
Previously, transferring a 10GB file took 15 minutes. With the new broadcast network, this time has been reduced to just 2 minutes. This upgrade minimizes network latency, eliminates bottlenecks, and increases port density potential.
The Problem
The existing network infrastructure, composed of various brands such as Avaya, Dell, and HP, posed equipment management challenges. It could not handle demanding media file transfer rates, and multiple network layers with mixed VLAN segments caused high latency. Additionally, existing network switches were nearing end-of-life and were not prepared for future projects.
The Solutions
IPSB Technology partnered with Arista Networks, known for scalable, high-performance, and ultra-low latency cloud networks. Together, they established switches with 48 access ports of 1/10GbE and 4 ports of 40G/100G backbone for uplink. Adopting a spine and leaf network architecture allows optimized data flow, unlike traditional three-tier architectures.
As Malaysia’s No. 1 integrated media group, Media Prima proactively updated its network system to support up to 4 x 100 Gbps bandwidth, aligning with its “future-ready” aspirations.
The Highlights
Utilizing 4 ports of 40G backbone switches, Media Prima’s network system is now more efficient and organized. The upgrade significantly reduced media transfer times, allowing a 10GB file to be transferred in less than 2 minutes. This enhancement simplifies and differentiates network segments between user and system environments, ensuring the network is well-prepared for future demands.
